A Few Thoughts on New Beginnings

New beginnings are a wonderful thing. They bring fresh energy, optimism, and hope. They introduce you (or re-introduce you) to parts of yourself you are excited to know and express. They help you to let go of old crap and open you up to new people, places, and things.

Sounds great, right? But when it comes to actually taking action towards something new, you may find yourself having a different experience. The movement from longing or idea into actual application can trigger all sorts of inner demons. Taking that first step can feel daunting and really vulnerable. And the more it matters to us, the more our resistance rears its head. Check out this quote from The War of Art by Steven Pressfield:

“The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”

You have a natural urge to grow and expand. This is your life force and creative flow, and it needs expression. When you allow it in, your experiences bring nourishment and satisfaction. They uplift your mood and strengthen your confidence. But if you dampen or resist this dynamic force, you may feel dissatisfied, anxious, or apathetic. Maybe even depressed.

So, when fear or resistance shows up: I suggest you close your eyes, take a deep breath, and focus on the feeling that is pulling you forward. What are you excited about or intrigued by? What will it feel like once you’ve done it? What will be fulfilling about this new path? What will feel liberating or expansive? What will bring delight? When we focus on what feels good and inspiring, it can carry us through the tough parts.

So remember to enjoy and trust the process, even when it feels scary or you doubt your success. That is all a part of leaving our safety zone and stepping into the unknown! And what waits for you on the other side is definitely worth it!
